Music in Spanish Class from Mis Clases Locas

If you’ve been reading Mis Clases Locas, you know I love using authentic music to teach Spanish. I created Música miércoles and Baile viernes, which have become weekly staples in many Spanish classrooms. Spanish class routines quickly become student favorites.

I have posted many Spanish Class Music Ideas over the years. My Hispanic Heritage Month Music Bracket & mania musical – March Music Madness have been hits as well.

But what if you want to bring even more excitement and learning to your Spanish class? Enter Roxxem, an app that’s about to make it even easier to teach Spanish with music. For full transparency, Roxxem approached me to share my opinions on their site.

So, What is Roxxem?

Roxxem is a brand-new app designed to help teachers turn any song into an interactive Spanish lesson. It’s perfect for adding a little musical flair to your lessons without the prep. Think of it as a great companion to Música miércoles, with ready-made activities that make using music in Spanish class a breeze.

How to Use Roxxem in Your Spanish Class

Roxxem gives you so many ways to incorporate music into your lessons. Here are a few favorites:

  • Search by Grammar, Vocab, or Topic: Need to teach a specific tense such as the preterite? Just search “Preterite,” and Roxxem will pull up songs that demonstrate the tense in context.

  • Interactive Lyrics and Videos: Play a music video with subtitles, translations, and interactive lyrics. Let students stop and review each word in real time.

  • Live Classroom Games: Turn songs into classroom games where students race to fill in missing lyrics with live leaderboards. Many students love competing with each other!

How Roxxem Works – Teach Spanish with Music

It’s simple to use. Just search for a song by grammar point or topic, like “Greetings,” and you’ll find dozens of songs ready to go. For example, select “Soy Yo” by Bomba Estéreo. (This fits perfectly with day 1 of my High-Frequency Verb Unit to Start Spanish 1 featuring Soy yo).

You can watch the video with subtitles and even pause to analyze the lyrics in detail. It is a great way to expose students to new vocabulary and phrases through authentic music. For example, below is a great addition to your Selena unit!

Mis Clases Locas Roxxem Review for music in Spanish class

My Roxxem Review

Honestly, I am pretty impressed with Roxxem. Spanish teachers could use it instead of LyricsTraining. (Especially if you used my Distance Super 7 Verb Unit) But, compared to LyricsTraining only Spanish is available at the moment.

There are a lot of my favorite songs in Spanish available to use. Just on the first page, I see tons of songs that I have used in past mania musical & Hispanic Heritage Month Music Brackets.

I think Roxxem would be a great emergency Sub Plans or fast finisher option for Differentiation & Extension. Tech games like this are great with headphones while other students are doing Speaking Assessments. I would not want to use it weekly, as with anything, too much gets stale.

I know that when I pick songs to use in my music resources, I spend hours vetting their appropriateness. Even then teachers in certain school cultures find things they would not want to use with their students in songs. I do not know what kind of vetting process these lyrics, songs, and videos go through to be included. I do like how the songs have a G, PG, or PG-13 rating to better inform teachers.

So, as always, you would want to preview any song and video before playing them for students. You are the expert on your exact situation, classes, and school.

I can see the value in the Pro Account for the extra features such as classes with easy tracking. It is similar to the tracking in Sr. Wooly. I can see the value that these are authentic songs in Spanish. But, at the same time, these songs are not meant to be comprehensible, so this site would be better for High School Spanish levels 2+. If you only teach super novices, this might not be the best fit.

Finally, I would for sure try out Roxxem with students. It provides authentic listening comprehension practice for students while giving teachers a break from being the ones providing the input.
