Love songs in Spanish class

It can be a challenge to find the best Spanish love songs for Spanish teachers. I want something appropriate for the classroom, but also fun and engaging for students. Many of my favorite love songs might not be the best for language learning.

Easy Spanish songs are often romantic ballads with slow tempos. But a beautiful Spanish love song will often flop with students as boring.

Songs from the Hot Latin songs chart and Latin Grammy Awards are typically not appropriate, nor the easiest Spanish songs

The best songs for class from Spanish speakers have a catchy melody, clear pronunciation, with clean official music videos.

Luckily, there are plenty of great songs about love in Spanish to use in class.

Here are more romantic Spanish love songs and some of the best love songs in Spanish.

“El Amor de Su Vida” – Grupo Frontera & Grupo Firme (2023)

This modern regional Mexican hit is a newer addition to my Spanish love songs playlist for class. The lyrics focus on devotion and deep emotional connection, making it perfect for discussing themes like el amor verdadero and relationships. The clear storytelling and slower tempo make it especially accessible for novice-mid to intermediate learners.

“Índigo” – Camilo y Evaluna Montaner

If you want a sappy, romantic love song story in Spanish, real-life couple Camilo & Evaluna is it. They have multiple videos in Spanish documenting their love story. This video shows them finding out they are pregnant and telling their family. The chorus includes the line “Porque llego a mi vida, el amor, de mi vida.” This is a love song in Spanish for him, a love song in Spanish for her & in my opinion, the best love song in Spanish right now.

“Tan Enamorados” – CNCO

A classic boy band love songs in Spanish is Tan Enamorados from CNCO explaining they are so in love. My students loved the classic boy band feel of this video when it was in our mania musical – March Music Madness bracket a couple of years ago. This is for sure one of the love songs in Spanish for her.

“Mi Persona Favorita” – Río Roma

This older pop song from Mexican duo Río Roma is appropriate and more about liking someone than super romantic love, which makes it middle school Spanish relatable. This is great if you are looking for a classic Spanish love song. The chorus is: “y ya eres mi persona favorite, cada minuto a tu lado es genial, y no hay nada en el mundo mundial, que ame mas que estar contigo, cada momento lo haces especial.” It is fun and danceable with an enjoyable video too.

“Chocolate” by Jesse y Joy

This Valentine-themed video is sticky and sweet and a perfectly appropriate Spanish love song. Who does not love chocolate?! Also, it is sung by Mexican siblings Jesse y Joy. This Spanish love song is used in my Valentine’s themed 3 weeks of Para Empezar Bell Ringers if you are interested in activities for every day.

“Cuando te Veo” by ChocQuibTown

This is a super positive song from Colombian group ChocQuibTown. It also has positive Afro-Latino representation. The repetitive high frequency phrase “cuando to veo” goes well with the present tense Sweet 16.

“Robarte un beso” by Carlos Vives, Sebastián Yatra

This catchy love song for Spanish class has positive vibes. This song has been a hit for many of my classes over the years. Colombians Carlos Vives and Sebastián Yatra are often fan favorites in class

“Amor Prohibido” by Selena

A classic romantic song in Spanish is Amor Prohibido by Mexican-American singer Selena. This song about love in Spanish tells the story of forbidden love between two people who must keep their relationship secret. It touches on issues such as gender roles, social expectations, and forbidden relationships, making it an ideal topic for discussion in Spanish class. Or you could also use Como la Flor. See Selena in Spanish Class for a lot more resources to teach about her.

“La Vida Es Un Carnaval” – Celia Cruz

This upbeat tune from one of my favs, Cuban Celia Cruz, is a little bit of a different type of love song. It is perfect for those dreary winter days when everyone just needs a little pick-me-up. The song describes how life is like a carnival, sometimes filled with joyous highs but also some sorrowful lows. The song is more about self-love and encourages you to make the most out of every moment despite life’s ups and downs.

“Amor” – Emmanuel Cortes

“Amor” is a newer 2023 sweet, romantic song with simple, repetitive lyrics that are easy for Spanish students to follow. The message centers on affection and appreciation, making it an excellent choice for middle school and high school Spanish classes. This song works well for identifying present-tense verbs, discussing emotions, or as a low-stress listening activity during Valentine’s Day or relationship-themed lessons.

Best Break-up Songs in Spanish

OK, I know not everyone wants to use romantic songs in Spanish, so if you want a twist here are some of my favorite Spanish break-up songs to use instead.

Break-Up Songs for Spanish class from Mis Clases Locas

“Amor con hielo” by Morat

If you want a different twist on Spanish songs of love this song from Colombia group Morat is actually a breakup song. It is a very catchy pop/rock song with an entertaining video story as well.

“Aquí Te Espero” – Iván Cornejo (2024)

This new addition from 2024 is an emotional breakup song is excellent for Spanish class. Aquí Te Espero has clear pronunciation, slower pace, and relatable theme of longing after a relationship ends. The lyrics are appropriate for school use and lend themselves well to activities focused on emotions, past experiences, and reflective writing. It’s especially effective for novice-high to intermediate learners who benefit from repetition and straightforward language. Iván Cornejo is a younger Mexican-American artist to watch for.

“El Amor Que Perdimos” by Prince Royce

For another sad song in Spanish, Dominican-American Prince Royce sings about the love we lost, looking so young! Students might enjoy seeing him when he was a baby singer in this classic Spanish break up song. There is a fun bachata beat, that keeps the sappy song from actually feeling that sad.

“El Perdon” by Nicky Jam y Enrique Iglesias

This Spanish break up song about Forgiveness went triple platinum in my classes for years. Make sure to preview since it does include some innuendo about drinking and you wouldn’t want to use the official video.

“11 Razones” by Aitana

Finally, I absolutely love this song, so it has to be included in break-up Spanish songs for Valentine’s day. I was crushed when it did not win in our mania musical – March Music Madness bracket in 2021. 11 Razones is a danceable angry chick punk break-up song. It is fun and works well for anti-Valentine Música miércoles.
