The Movie Puss in Boots The Last Wish in Spanish class

Showing movies in the Spanish classroom can be a great way to engage your students and help them learn about the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. If you are a long-time reader, you know I love using Appropriate movies for Spanish class.

El Gato con botas: El último deseo/ Gato con botas: El último deseo are the Spanish translation of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. (I will use a mix of the 2 titles used regionally in this post). This 2022 film is a spinoff of the popular animated Shrek series, as well as a sequel to the 2011 film, Puss in Boots.

While the film is originally in English, there is a ton of Spanish sprinkled in the film. Plus, you always have the option to watch the Spanish version of the film. *Please note, in this post, I am sharing resources for the 2022 film version, the sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Summary of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

The 2022 Puss in Boots The Last Wish is an animated adventure-comedy movie from Dreamworks Animation, that is a twist on the classic fairytale. It stars the voice of Antonio Banderas as Puss, the heroic cat who embarks on a quest to save his hometown from the treacherous kidnap plot of Jack and Jill. On this magical journey, he meets a mysterious witch who grants him three wishes.

Puss fulfills his duties with help from his friends Humpty Dumpty, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), and the Great Fearless Fury. Together they face off against Jack and Jill’s wicked schemes with laughter and plenty of surprises along the way. Packed with humor, action, great animation, music, and the use of Spanish, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish would work well for elementary-high school Spanish students.

Using Gato con botas: El último deseo in Your Spanish Class

This movie would be great for Spanish classes. It has a ton of Spanish in the context used all through the film, with Latinx actors. It would pair well with a past tense fairy tale unit, as many classic fairy tale characters appear in the film. (Goldilocks & the 3 Bears, Jack & Jill, the Big Bad Wolf, etc).

Unlike most films I suggest set in a specific Spanish-speaking country this one is a little different. It is for sure set somewhere Spanish-speaking, but not one precise location. Based on my research Puss in Boots is set in Spain, but the locations are mixed of Mexico and Wild West. (Texas and North Mexico such as the desert and Texan characters in the first movie). It is mentioned Puss in Boots lives in San Ricardo, which is probably based in Andalucia, Spain. So basically, he is from a fantasy Spanish-speaking place. 🙂

What ages is the film Puss in Boots for?

The 100-minute film is rated PG. I took my 6-year-old to the movie in the theater and he was obsessed with it. I loved the film as well but especially kept thinking of all of the Spanish used in the film and how it would work great in Spanish class. Just like the Shrek movies it is based on, there is a lot of hidden adult humor. This makes this film way more liked by middle and high school students than some other cheesy animated films. (It is similar to the comedy of Ferdinand).

Based on Common Sense Media, suggest the film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish for ages 9+. There is animated violence and a little light swearing and rude words. The wolf is kind of scary, along with some fighting scenes. Even though I took my 1st grader to the movie, as a teacher, I would show this film in 3rd-12th grade.
