Telling the Time Spanish Class Routine

When this blog post was originally published in October 2014, I used the Avancemos textbook. See what I would use now for curriculum>> Mis Clases Locas Curriculum for Spanish 1-4

At that time, each day students were responsible for introducing and starting class with “La Bienvenida.” They welcomed the class and stated the date and time in Spanish as a part of our daily routines. This was one of our daily activities. You can see here what Bell Ringers & Spanish Class Routines I would suggest today instead.

Learning Time in Spanish

Spanish 1 struggled with telling time in Spanish using analog clocks. At the time of this original post, we practiced it each day by doing La Bienvenida. I found using the “menos” side of the clock was tricky for some students. They were not great at reading non digital clocks.

Telling time in Spanish with the “menos” version was especially hard for students who struggle with math. Many high school students did not know how to tell the time at all using a non-digital clock. It was an essential skill using everyday language.

We probably should have used a Spanish clock worksheet, like I included below for practice with Spanish time expressions.

Need telling time in Spanish practice?

Learn the time in Spanish with a Paper Watch

I found an activity my first year teaching where students made a “watch.” I cut strips of scrap paper or card stock. Each student made a clock face on the strip of paper.

Lucky for you, it is now one of the free resources I Included with my free Spanish clock worksheets.

NEW UPDATE – Use my Spanish Telling Time Worksheets & my Spanish Telling Time watch templates. Print many copies of page 3 if you want students to create their own time. Or use pages 4 & 5 for ready-to-go watches to practice telling time in Spanish. These printable worksheets are great resources for your telling time in Spanish class lesson plans.

Learning Time in Spanish Activity 1

Students tape their homemade paper watches on. They go around asking each other for the time in Spanish. It gave a few minutes of telling the time in Spanish practice.

This Spanish-telling time activity went pretty well. It allowed students to ask and tell the time in Spanish multiple times. They practice the target vocabulary in the new language.

The issue was they were only practicing telling the time in Spanish on their watch. I wanted them to have a variety of practice clocks to learn the time in Spanish.

My first class started out walking around. But the issue was with my shy section. They were all just avoiding asking each other and barely speaking. Spur of the moment I came up with the following solution to help students practice how to say the time in Spanish.

New Telling the Time in Spanish Practice Activity

Role Play and act like a parent & small child who wants to know the time in Spanish. Use my sets of super simple worksheets including Spanish clock worksheets.

  • Students make a paper “watch” with the time of their choice. Or option 2 print & cut my watch templates. Cut many copies of page 3 if you want students to create their own time, Or use pages 4 & 5 for ready to go watches.
  • The class makes an inside/outside circle (or in my class set up it works better to have 2 lines facing each other).
  • One side is the “parent” and the other side is the whiny kid who can’t read the clock.
  • The whiny child holds up their watch and says “mammmmmiii, ¿Qué hora es?” (Mom what time is it)
  • The “parent” then responds with the time in Spanish.
  • The students then switch roles.
  • The teacher rings a bell and one side rotates, so everyone has a new partner.
  • This telling time in Spanish practice continues until they have gone through each partner

What worked well with the Telling the Time in Spanish Activity

  • Students loved playing the part of the whiny kids.
  • Everyone was involved and always had someone to talk to. It was a great way to work on Spanish la hora.
  • There was a lot of repetition of learning time in Spanish
  • Students felt much more confident telling the time in Spanish at the end of class.
  • It can get in specific repetitions of vocab that you might have to cover like de la mañana, son las dos, de la noche, es la una y media, de la tarde, son las tres
