As a teacher, your voice is one of your most essential tools. However, projecting it all day can lead to vocal strain and fatigue. This is where a voice amplifier can make a big difference.

Whether you’re teaching in a noisy classroom, addressing a large group, or simply wanting to save your voice, finding the best voice amplifier for teachers is a worthwhile investment.

In this post, we’ll cover the benefits of using a voice amplifier, what to look for in a device, top recommendations, and practical tips for classroom use.

My History of Voice Loss

My entire life I have have had the problem of chronically losing my voice. Yes, this comes from someone who talks pretty often and uses her voice for activities.

While in high school I actually went to an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) doctor about how often I was losing my voice. My main issue was overuse. This was at a time I had two classes of choir per day. I also sang in the school musical and show choir. Plus I was on the dance team at all of the noisy games.

The treatment for voice loss included:

  • Resting my voice if at all possible. Plus using a handheld microphone for solo performances so I did not have to strain to sing.
  • Taking Tums regularly. This was to help with the acid reflux that was irritating my throat.
  • Warm drinks like tea after shows or extra vocal strain. My actual favorite warm drink that started during this time is hot water with fresh lemon & honey.

I continues to batter my voice as a camp counselor every summer. I really wish I had a headset microphone when I was in Camp Adventure. It would have been awesome for our outdoor activities and field trips where we acted like tour guides for kids. Unfortunately, a wired microphone headset was not a norm in the early 2000s.

Teacher’s Voice Loss

Flash forward to my first year teaching high school Spanish. Spoiler that is not surprising to you reading, classroom teachers could really use a personal amplifier. A teacher’s voice gets hours of use a day.

To make it worse after school I was also directing the school musical and play. Plus, on Monday nights I was speaking to lecture halls of college students training them for Camp Adventure.

I could have really used a small size sound system with powerful sound to help me out back then!

Why Teachers Need a Voice Amplifier

Teachers often face challenging environments where clear communication is key. Here’s why a voice amplifier is essential:

  • Protects Vocal Health: Speaking loudly for hours can strain your vocal cords. A voice amplifier helps reduce this strain, preserving your voice over time.

  • Improves Classroom Management: Amplifying your voice ensures all students can hear instructions clearly, leading to better engagement and fewer misunderstandings.

  • Enhances Accessibility: Students sitting in the back of the room or those with hearing challenges benefit greatly from amplified sound.

  • Increases Comfort: By reducing the need to shout, you’ll feel more comfortable and focused during lessons.

It wasn’t until Fall of 2020 that I finally purchased a zoweetek mini voice amplifier. In Iowa, my school started in August 2020 hybrid teaching. I was 100% in the classroom from day 1. Half of my students were in the room with me & half were at home. This rotated every other day.

From recommendations from others I got this zoweetek voice amplifier in black. It was especially helpful when doing special person interviews that were recorded for absent students. I was using the compact size voice amplifier over a mask.

I was trying to go for effective communication with a mask. So if you want clear sound quality it sounds much better without a mask.

A great feature was long battery life. I also liked that it had a rechargeable battery. A single charge lasted me a long time, depending on how much I had it on during the day. It has hours of battery life.

I felt like fitness instructors or pop stars with the adjustable headset. It had a shoulder strap around my neck that was adjustable. There was also a back clip option. I liked the affordable price and lightweight design.
